(beg) bag to differ

Before I begin my humble opinion, I would want to emphasize that this is just personally my opinion and it has nothing to do with the living nor the dead. Just that I had something in mind to share. To voice out and to cry wolf for the situation that is happening to my 1Malaysia.

Just when the Cabinet confirmed that they have decided to drop English as the medium for the Maths and Science subject, I beg to differ for the comments made as I am watching the TV3 Nightline news. Since the beginning of the programme, it was not a success and many students fouled at the attempt to master the Maths and Science subjects.

To me, there are several reasons for there was the urge to revert back to Bahasa as well as vernacular languages. In my humble opinion, the main reason for the failure was that the resources was not sufficient enough. When I mentioned about the resources I am implying the teachers. It is really saddening to know that we are reverting back to the old times. Said the former Prime Minister from the Star, I have the same feelings too.
We do not have capable teachers even now. Most of the qualify teachers no longer in this profession. Conducting tuition classes seem to provide better paycheck than to remain in the vicinity of the school? It is the best option I think giving that I had a friend who did well with the tuition center. After all, the pay is good.

Working in today world, I was seriously think that by putting emphasis on the English is a whole lot better as compared to in Bahasa. Coming from the background of the SRK and SMK where medium is in Bahasa, I am not condemning that being taught in Bahasa it was not good. It is just that we are lacking of something. Me not being bias or what but the majority of the people I knew coming from vernacular school had problem with the languages. Especially when I am referring to those who studied in Chinese schools. They have serious problem in Bahasa as well as in English.

Once I sit in for a meeting where the minutes was drafted by one of my colleagues. I had problem reading the English. Grammatically wrong, improper sentence nor at least I should be able to understand the message she trying to convey. Even with Wingz’s Ah Beng English, I could still decipher what he was trying to tell. Where we have done wrong?

Seriously even when I talked to a friend who is currently lecturing in Tunku Abdul Rahman College or KTAR, he had headache when a student came up to him and asked if he could translate the meaning in Chinese. When he showed this friend of mine his reference book, it was full of translation on top of the words. Yes, in Chinese.

I mean, what we have done wrong with the education system? You tell me about it.
That is why I beg to differ that reverting the medium used for Maths and Science will not help. Tell me about it. Here is a very good example of why it will not help.

Back in 2001, I sit for an advance mathematics paper in TAR College. Mind you that the medium used is English and somehow, out of many question I could not comprehend the question “What is the product of x and y?” I was flabbergasted and mind was wondering what the fuck is the meaning of product. Found out later it means the multiplication of x and y. Many of us could not get it. Or maybe it is just me that do not know the meaning of ‘product’

Hence, do you think that simply reverting will help? Just like pressing rewind button? Come on, please look into the broader picture here.
