Replacing Faulty Modem
After been serving on the U Mobile and Digi Network for nearly 3 years, the device decided to go to where the rest of them will be going at. Incinerator or any large dump site. Waiting to be rot.
The next thing I need to do is to get a replacement unit. Hence I browse the lowyat.net for the pricing to see if there’s anyone selling the USB modem. It should be by now a common item or should I say a commodity. There are few models available in the market mainly supplied by D-Link. I was keen to get the DWM-156 selling at RM114 when compared to Huawei E1752 which is slight on the pricey side selling at RM145.

When I was at Lowyat this morning, most of the merchant told me that the model DWM-156 is out of stock. I was pretty furious to see that they ran out of stock and present me only with DWM-152 which is up to 3.6M so called the 3.5G. The way these people reacted to me sounds like asking me to settle for second best or rather, they don’t even bother with it.
Luckily I remembered that there’s another model based on my survey the night before. So, I went over to that shop that sell the modem and make additional few purchase there.

As for the modem, Huawei E1752 HSPA USB is an ultra slim form factor that is ideal for users who need high speed data on the move. With the white color design, it looks pretty elegant. To me, function over form. =)
Unboxing is typical with some notes and RFTM stuff. Installation is straight forward plug and play and does not require any additional software or drivers. Simply place the DiGi data enabled SIM into the Huawei E1752 HSPA USB Modem and then plug modem into the USB slot on the laptop. Popped up is the installation to go through. After that, create a profile for the service provider subscribed to, in my case DiGi Telco.
The Huawei E1752 HSPA USB Modem supports the main data standards which includes GPRS, GSM, HSDPA, UMTS and EDGE. The E1752 is compatible with Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista and MAC OS X.
Setting up the APN for DiGi and the handshake
The only thing that perplexed me is when they provide additional value where one can add in mini-SD card for additional storage. Looking at another perspective is that when one is connected to the network and need to use for exchanging data via USB storage, this would be rather stupid given that one have to disconnect and remove the USB. Rather it is useful as personal storage device. Like it’s where one keep their viruses, worms, trojans, or even compromising photos videos important stuff.
