Man and Wife – A Thought Of

December 4th, 2009

Tony Parsons write the sequel for the Man and Boy entitled “Man and Wife”. The story continues on the family of Harry Silver and the affairs surround him. As I flipped the pages, I feel somehow connected to him. Perhaps it is because how he chased for romance and love.

After I read the first book of his, ‘Man and Boy’ I thought that would be the end of it but realized the sequel is much more tempting. It resolves the struggle for the single parenthood and the mixed families members.

Parsons put things in perspective especially in modern world. He put the male ego, male frailty and the perils of temptations in this world. How the men in desire for pursuit of things that they can’t have it.

Now that I have read two of his books, I have the urge to read the remaining of his works. Ehm… my new favourite author!!!

The Road Home

November 23rd, 2009

It has been kept on the side of my car door for months. Finally, I managed to finish it. I not sure when I begins but I am for sure that it took me quite a while. I can’t remember how I pick it up off the shelves but probably amongst the Orange Prize for Fiction tag was there.

It is a story about a Polish man, whom lost his job and his wife decided against all odd to go to London and work leaving his age old mother, Ina and the young little daughter, Maya back in Auror. Perhaps that Lev was lucky because he still have Rudi, a character of fire and strength throughout the story to watch over Lev’s mother and his child.

The story begins with the trip leaving for London and ends when he found the road home. In the deep city of London, his heart finds the people from all over the country. The ‘immigrants’, ‘foreigners’ or ‘outsiders’ which we do have here in Malaysia. The insight of these lonely creatures outcast from the homeland to struggle to make a living. Some lost in the temptation of the city while others longed to returns.

It was a intense book, I would say. The feeling of melancholia is overwhelming and this suits me just fine. Although the book received mixtures of critics, I think Rose Tremain deserves the credit for this wonderful work.

man and boy

June 4th, 2009

It took me less than 2 week or so to complete this read. It is a simple easy read. Not too harsh, too deep and too tough to come by. But despite the work, it gives me the effect of bittersweet love. How the author, Tony Parsons inject the emotions into the pages I flipped through slowly.

The storyline was almost predictable but I find myself chasing through the pages till the very last end of it. It was a story about Harry Silver, a man who experiences loss in life. Job. Separation from wife. Death of a father. Upbringing a son. Welcoming a new love in life.

It reflect on the modern man today. The types you tend to see around. I don’t know much about this author but tend to get to see his novels around. Sort of a “lad lit” according to the bookstores. Well, I kind of like this book. Perhaps should I get a sequel from this, “Man and Wife”?

Highly recommended for those who like simple words and to understand todays men. Enough said… just read it.
