The Karate Kid
Thanks to the TimeOut, I manage to catch the movie at 1Utama for the screening. It was a day earlier premiere hence the security was pretty tight to prevent the unauthorized recording.
The underlying story is the same like the original Karate Kid – Kid shifted to new environment, learn new things and against all odds to achieve something. In this movie, it tells a young kid, Dre Parker played by Jaden Smith a 12-year-old moved to China with his mother, Sherry Parker for a better living opportunity. She got a job in the car factory there.
Dre falls for his classmate, Mei Ying who is against by Cheng (the bully). Cheng with Kung Fu training beats the daylight out of Dre. Mr. Han played by Jackie Chan accepted Dre to be his student and taught him Kung Fu where Dre will now face off with Cheng in an open Kung Fu tournament.
In the end, the good guy wins over bad guy. Happy ending.
Everyone knows that this movie is somewhat of a remake of the Karate Kid. Storyline is much the same. What I like about the whole story is that it injected the “lesson about life”. Jaden Smith acted well in the movie, I mean amazingly well for such a young kid. Meanwhile, Jackie Chan’s character was well portrayed as a teacher. Teaching not only Kung Fu but the well mannerism.
Even there are few scenes that I felt it is out of focus, but the movie make up with the touching moments and some “real pain” effect during the face off. Since the movie took place in China, you are bespectacled with some beautiful mountain and Great Wall of China scenes.
My ratings? 8/10
And I am looking forward for more appearance from Jaden Smith
