The Tiger Mom

Two days ago, I was browsing some magazines at the book store while waiting for the movie. I came across an article from TIME magazine. One of the title that captivated me was the “Tiger Mom” issue.

It seems the beginning of 2011 sparked of with the “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” mapping out her parenting method. Amy Chua (A Yale law professor) labeled as Tiger Mom draws attention to her private life as everyone (the Westerns) was shocked with the way she train two of her daughters, Lulu and Sophia.

Her stories tell of harsh techniques which some of them I been through before myself. One of them was not allowing playdates, sleepovers, television or computer games. Back then, my mom also did the same. I couldn’t play any of the console games when I was in primary school, except during a term holiday. My mom justification was to allow us to concentrate on something else rather than just games. Perhaps she was fearing the addiction and I slack at studies. Eventually, the restriction was slowly drop as I grew older. Now, I do agree with her it was for my best.

In regards to Amy Chua’s parenting, I do agree with her. I had to. It was for the best for the kids. No matters whether is it harsh, cruel but in comparison to the world out there? I recalled my cousin who had to cane her son. Deep in bruise, tears was flowing from her eyes as she caned her son. Her son, my nephew was rude, lack of respect and no manners under the upbringing of my uncle. When he returned back to my cousin home, she had to do a lot of stuff to correct him. It was painful time for both the mother and son. Now, a few years later I find my nephew much a better child.

If you don’t put him through a “controlled” cruel and harsh parenting, will he able to survive if he’s out there? At least during the controlled environment, it’s under parent control. That at least confined within the family. When you are outside in the cold harsh world, there’s no limit of what might you getting into.

I had to thank my mom for putting me through. I still remember the time she hit me with the rubber hose at the school canteen. It did bruise my self-esteem a little but as I come into marketplace, that seems so menial.

What do you think? Do you have a tiger mom too?
